La Bulgarie a été le deuxième État à interdire le fracking sur son territoire. Cette décision faisait à une forte opposition de la population face aux projet envisagés pour l’extraction de gaz de schiste. Le sous-sol de la Bulgarie contient du gaz de schiste.

Bulgaria, a country with a rich deposit of shale gas has been the second country to decide a moratorium on fracking.Bulgaria is effectively blocking shale gas exploration and extraction.

So far, there have been no official national studies to determine the level of shale gas resources in Bulgaria, although US energy company Direct Petroleum announced it had discovered 6 billion cubic metres at Deventci and 300 billion cubic metres near Etropole. The US Energy Information Administration has estimated that Bulgaria may host  481 billion cubic metres (17 trillion cubic feet) of shale gas.
